Road-tested: Does the 2024 Honda Sport HR-V live up to its bold promises?

So, two months ago to the day, I traded in my beloved 2014 Lexus GX460.

A big tank of a luxury SUV that required Premium fuel, something that was hurting our wallet. Even though I loved the grace, style, and comfortable ride, because I travel frequently, I wanted something a little lighter on the pocketbook.

I tested Toyotas having already owned a Highlander and Hondas, previously also owning a Honda Pilot – but was focused on something more subcompact.

Well, after of 2-3 months of consideration, I finally landed on the 2024 Honda Sport HR-V, and reluctantly handed over my GX460 key fob to the dealer.

After a two months (and 3,000 miles) here’s what I found.

The 2024 Honda HR-V Sport edition is a compact SUV, combining sporty styling with practical features.

  • sleek exterior design with unique blacked-out accents
  • gloss-black grille
  • black alloy wheels
  • comfortable and spacious cabin with modern tech features
  • 7-inch digital gauge cluster
  • 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system

The Honda Sport HR-V Sport is powered by a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder engine.

It delivers 158 horsepower with a smooth CVT transmission (continuously variable transmission, a type of automatic transmission that uses pulleys and a belt or chain instead of fixed gears under the hood).

This provides the useful fuel economy I was seeking. I am averaging north of 27 mpg in combined town and highway driving. Way better than a full-size SUV and paying for regular gas at the pump, rather than very expensive premium gas.

And, I am super happy with the responsive handling, especially in town.

Standard safety features of the Honda Sport HR-V Sport include:

  • Honda Sensing® with adaptive cruise control
  • lane-keeping assist
  • adaptive cruise control
  • lane keeping assist system
  • Multi-angle rearview camera
  • front airbags
  • side curtain airbags with rollover sensor

This makes my new choice in driving a well-rounded choice for drivers seeking a stylish yet versatile vehicle. And Honda’s new body color, Nordic Forest Pearl, allows my car to stand out visually – I’ve had many positive comments.

Circling back to the modern tech features of the Honda HR-V Sport, if am pleasantly surprised.

The 2024 Honda HR-V Sport is equipped with various modern technology features designed to enhance comfort, convenience, and connectivity.

I have an iPhone, so the Apple CarPlay is a great feature, especially for my music playlist. The Bluetooth is great, especially for a handsfree phone call – in my state it’s illegal to hold a cellphone while driving.

And there’s several USB ports for charging and connectivity. The automatic climate control maintains the desired temperature inside the vehicle without manual adjustments. I absolutely love the smart entry, allowing me to start the car and enter without taking the key fob out of my pocket.

Finally, the Honda audio system has six strategically located speakers that delivers quality sound throughout the cabin. Honestly the sound system is as good or better than my old Lexus.

Honda markets the 2024 HR-V Sport as “ideal for active lifestyles, often depicting it in outdoor settings or showing its spacious cargo for sports equipment. This appeals to outdoor enthusiasts and young families who want a versatile SUV for both city driving and weekend adventures.”

I think there marketing quote is right on actually, except for one important thing. Now retired, my wife and I are excited to explore the vistas of Colorado and the hardpan of Arizona where 5 of our grandchildren live. I am most certain that our Honda HR-V Sport will do that with comfort and economy.
