Three little letters in the name of the 2025 RAM 1500 RHO are really important to know.
For starters, they are not the same as the TRX, a fun off-roader that was discontinued for this model year. No one really knows what RHO stands for but some theorize it is short for “rhino” because that was a codeword for the truck during development.
While the aggressive styling remains and this truck looks like it could eat other cars for lunch, the RHO doesn’t quite have the same beefy V8 engine as the TRX.
After driving one for a week, here are the things I liked best.
1. Overall design
Passengers noticed this right away as they approached the vehicle: The RHO is a beast. You have to grip a handle and launch yourself into the truck. The design is meant to look like it could drive through a deep ravine of mud and water and barely notice.
2. The 14.5 inch screen
Most of my passengers who came along on test drives also noticed the massive center screen as well. It measures 14.5 inches and looks bigger than just about any tablet you would use for email and web. At this size, all of the controls were easy to find and responded well to clicks and swipes, which is important when you are driving on muddy country roads. You don’t want the vehicle to be confusing or the controls hard to find when you are distracted by mud.
3. Off-road specs
I had to check this spec a few times before I believed it. Not only does the RHO look like something that is rugged and hungry to drive over boulders, it actually can go off-roading. I didn’t try this but the RHO is rated to drive through 32-inches of water. Try to imagine what that depth is like — basically, that’s the height of a small child.
4. Extreme power
I punched it a few times to catch up to traffic and the RHO is a capable machine. The twin-turbo engine might not be as massive as the V8 on the TRX model but it certainly can move you forward quickly. It’s 540 horsepower and has 521 lb-ft of torque. It feels quite exciting to be in a rugged truck like this and then propel forward almost like you are in a Challenger instead.
5. Price
If you liked the TRX, you might love the RHO. For starters, at around $70,000, it’s cheaper than the TRX which ran closer to $100,000 or even up higher. Trucks are expensive! But the savings on the RHO are significant while the truck is capable, fun to drive, and tech laden.
