On recently released the new Cloudsurfer Next and Cloudvista 2 new generation. These two shoes are just another example of how On is always recalibrating and reengineering toward better. Their collection of running and athletic shoes is second to none. It is no wonder they continue to grow in popularity.
I had the privilege of testing these two fan favorites recently. The Cloudsurfer Next is ideal for road runners and long distance runs with its CloudTec Phase. While the Cloudvista 2 is perfect for road to trail, so I can tackle mixed terrain and trail runs. On’s consistent improvement on their already outstanding designs like the new Cloudsurfer Next and the Cloudvista 2 new generation is proof that no other shoe company seems to know runners like On.
Cloudsurfer Next:
The Cloudsurfer Next is patterned after On’s top race-day shoes. Designed with ultra-light uppers and highly breathable woven mesh it provides both stability and comfort. Complete with rubber pads on the outsoles for better road grip as you pick up your pace. With a stylish aesthetic race design, these shoes look as great as they feel and perform!
Stepping into the Cloudsurfer Next my foot is immediately greeted by a plush cushioned comfort. I’ve stated before that the Cloudsurfer is the most comfortable shoe I’ve ever worn, and the Cloudsurfer Next is the next evolution of this comfort. Lacing up for my first run, I especially appreciate the padded tongue that keeps the laces from biting into my dorsum (top of the foot). I know that this added comfort and cushion will allow me to run further.
Features:
Stepping out onto the road and picking up my pace into my run I can feel the CloudTec Phase design absorbing my weight and cushioning my step for a smooth heel-toe transfer. As I continue in my run the Cloudsurfer Next is extremely responsive and almost springy. Each stride feels like I am being propelled forward.
This is likely a result of the updated forefoot rocker and Helion superfoam midsole. For me this translates into smoother, longer runs. I feel like I get a little boost with each step and have more left in my legs for that extra push. My runs feel both dynamic and effortless, and I’m more inspired to run. It also helps that they only weigh 273 grams. Which is why the Cloudsurfer Next is built perfectly for everyday running.
On shoe squeak:
It is worth noting that I’ve actually taken longer on this review then I typically take. This is because I want to spend as much time as I can in this shoe. One of the reasons is because it is incredibly comfortable. However, the other reason is because I am one of the rare few who have a gate and step that have been the source of a persistent squeak when using the Cloudsurfer (and some other On shoes).
However, true to their word On’s adjustments in the CloudTec Phase have eliminated this issue. After logging hundreds of hours in this shoe it has yet to make one peep (or squeak). If anything, they are quieter than other running shoes I’ve worn. Additionally, the rubber pads on the outsole provide additional durability. All of these design updates and features in the Cloudsurfer Next make running faster easier – and more enjoyable and comfortable.
Cloudvista 2:
The Cloudvista 2 (new generation) is the ideal mixed terrain and trail running shoe. It transitions easily from road to trail and only weighs 305 grams. The re-engineered design provides more cushioning and comfort for longer, more difficult runs. The enhanced traction and responsiveness make tackling everything from mountains to goals more fun!
One of the first things I notice is the softer cushioning. The Cloudvista 2 new generation has a slightly higher stack height and it is noticeable. With Softer Helion for a superfoam midsole and breathable upper it not only cushions better, but has a distinctively and stylishly minimalist look.
Features:
Not only does the Cloudvista 2 have better cushioning, but it also is more stable and responsive. On my first run I notice this responsiveness. Regardless of the terrain, I just feel more in control. Running feels faster as my steps rebound feels accelerated. This is likely due to the newly redesigned two-pronged Speedboard. Each step feels cushioned and smoother as I experience a more enhanced rocker motion.
Recently, we had our first snow fall of the year and I was curious how the Cloudvista 2 would respond. However, On updated the Cloudvista 2 with a new ultra-sticky Missiongrip – a rubber outsole to prevent slipping. My doubts are quickly cast aside as stride after stride I feel surefooted. The bigger, more aggressive lugs and updated the tread pattern keep my feet from secure, even on smooth surfaces. I quickly find myself running with total confidence, even in steep and uneven terrain.
One improvement I would like to see is some reinforcing or added cushioning in the tongue. At times the laces bite and pinch along the top (dorsum) of my foot (admittedly, this may be more of a personal sensitivity). Overall, the Cloudvista 2 new generation gives me a faster feel to my runs, with added cushioning and improved traction.
Summary:
On continues to set itself apart in the running world. The Cloudsurfer Next and Cloudvista 2 next generation are another example of engineered innovation and comfort. The Cloudsurfer Next is a fantastic everyday running shoe that maximizes comfort, forward propulsion, and durability. Long distance and road runners will love the Cloudsurfer Next.
For runners who want to unlock the trail or enjoy a mix of road, trail, and mixed terrain the Cloudvista 2 next generation is ideal. The re-engineered design gives additional comfort, cushioning, and control with the upgraded rubber outsole. Runners will find the Cloudvista 2 next generation is an improved versatile trail shoe for more enjoyable runs in mixed terrain. Honestly, you can’t miss with either the Cloudsurfer Next or the Cloudvista 2 next generation – or both!
