SCARPA just released a new hiking shoe, the Moraine MID WP, for outdoor enthusiasts everywhere. Yet, having the right hiking shoe can be the difference between a great hike and a miserable experience. That is why SCARPA is equally rooted in innovation and tradition of craftsmanship. In line with the founding mission of producing the best footwear anywhere, the new Moraine MID WP hiking shoe is SCARPA’s next iteration. The Moraine MID WP hiking shoe is equal parts comfort, versatility, and innovation.
Experience:
Heading up the steep incline, the new SCARPA Moraine hiking shoe feels molded to my foot. Each step is comfortable, cushioned, and clings to the trail. Normally, I am used to a break-in period with a new boot. However, my first time out in the Moraine feels as though I’ve already hiked in them a hundred times.
As we wind our way through the trees I am amazed at just how well these hiking shoes grip the path. Rocks, roots, sand, gravel, incline, or ravine the soles of the Moraine have incredible traction. The outsole is a SuperGum rubber compound, which means the Moraine combines durability with a high level of grip. The outsole features a front tread to maximize adherence to the trail, while also featuring a heel tread that assists in braking. The tread on the ball of the foot helps to push off, and the mid-sole features a stability zone. Thus, the entire sole is working to maximize traction while keeping me nibble and comfortable. The new SCARPA Moraine is extremely versatile for whatever terrain I find myself wandering.
Even when that wandering takes me into a streambed or waterlogged trail, my feet stay comfortable in the Moraine MID WP hiking shoe. This is because the Moraine has a PFAS free waterproof breathable membrane lining. It delivers all the weather protection I need on the trail. Additionally, the Moraine is a lighter weight (585G) hiking shoe which allows me to hike farther. The only feature I would like to see, is additional padding and support for the ball of the foot. It could just be me, but I find on longer hikes I start to feel the wear of the trail on my forefoot.
RECCO Feature:
If you are like me, you often see the news headlines about missing hikers or someone getting lost in the backcountry. I always think that this is an unlikely scenario for myself (we all seem have that “it could never happen to me” mentality). However, I get that nagging thought in the back of my mind – “what if?” This concern is forever put to rest with the Moraine’s integrated RECCO reflector.
Many skiers are aware of the search functions of RECCO in the event of an avalanche. RECCO is a valuable tool for search-and-rescue teams. The SCARPA Moraine includes a RECCO receiver, making the wearer (me in this case) searchable out in the wilderness. What is even more impressive is SCARPA is the first brand to integrate RECCO into its trail products.
The reflectors weigh close to nothing and don’t sacrifice footwear functionality. So I get added peace of mind on any adventure without any compromise to performance. This early-to-market technology in the hiking category makes the wearer searchable in emergency situations. By far, this is one of the coolest features of the SCARPA Moraine MID WP. It also demonstrates just how intentionally and thoroughly they’ve designed every aspect of this hiking shoe.
Summary:
The SCARPA Moraine MID WP hiking shoe is incredibly innovative and functional. The Moraine is super comfortable with great features including excellent traction and stability, oiled Nubuck Leather, 100% Recycled Fabric and PFAS Free waterproof membrane. However, the RECCO receiver is an innovation and safety feature that sets the Moraine apart. Overall, the Moraine MID WP is a super versatile hiking shoe delivering exceptional comfort, support and traction in a nimble package.
