Mountain Hardwear Trail Sender Jacket review: A lightweight jacket for summer 2023

It doesn’t feel like it here in Minnesota, but summer is approaching quick! Pretty soon long days of fresh air and sunlight are going to be the standard as opposed to the prized commodity they are during rainy springtime.

With the sunshine comes more powerful and even potentially harmful 5+ UV rays. If you’re like me, you don’t like getting sunburnt but you also don’t like those oily lotion sunscreens that you keep reapplying all day long. An alternative: sunblocking shirts. In recent years, shirts, hats, and jackets with UPF ratings have been becoming more and more popular.

Mountain Hardwear released their spring collection for 2023 with a focus on sun protection. The new Trail Sender Jacket from the popular summer time Trail Sender collection expands upon Mountain Hardwear’s summertime sunblocking lineup.

I spent a number of weeks with the Trail Sender long sleeve hoodie and putting it through a number of weather conditions. One day I wore it on a walk and it provided a slight block to the wind but yet was light and comfortable. Another time I wore it in the rain. This jacket is not designed for the rain, nor is it waterproof. So to be clear, this isn’t a rain jacket. However, it did provide a barrier to the elements for a while until it eventually started to just take on too much water. So if you needed to throw this on and go out during a light sprinkle, you’ll be fine. If you know you’re going to be outside for extended periods of time in wet conditions, maybe opt for a waterproof option (like this one Gearadical tested not too long ago).

This jacket maintains an ultralight 8oz weight yet does not compromise its durability to do so. Made with 100% polyester and Mountain Hardwear’s signature Ripstop technology the Trail Sender hoodie is made to last. In addition to its durability, the Trail Sender features a UPF 50 rating. UPF filters harsh UV rays from penetrating through the material. The Trail Sender jacket comes in three neutral colors: Trail Dust, Black, and Black Spruce.

If you have hiking or fishing trips planned for this summer, do you have the UV protection you need? At $99.00 this jacket is on the expensive end but for those looking for serious sun protection at a serious lightweight. Mountain Hardwear men’s lightweight Trail Sender Jacket is a tested, trusted option from a trusted brand.
